Ross and Harper are a young couple living in the United States, but their short-lived romance is torn apart when Harper is deported back to her home in Canada. Unwilling to commit to marriage Ross decides to hire a fake husband so Harper can re-enter the Country.
A renowned circus dog is the only one left behind after her traveling show leaves town. In a stroke of luck, she is found by Billy, a kid from the city who has just moved to town, and he takes her to live at a farm among a quirky cast of farm animals.
In September of 1968, middle schooler Rita Pettis runs into her neighbor's niece rocking an afro, the first she's ever seen. When encouraged to try the new hair-do, she reports to school only to find herself suspended for wearing her natural hair.
