Recently arrived from Recife, bachelor Paulo goes to a party in Rio de Janeiro and there he meets Lucíola, with whom he falls in love. Despite his friend Sá having announced that Lucíola is a prostitute, Paulo begins to experience great love with her, but cannot avoid being jealous.
Dr. George Medeiros, a brilliant scientist, is badly disfigured when his wife takes a lover and plans to murder him. After months in the hospital, he returns with nothing in mind but revenge.
Follows the relationship between two couples: An unemployed professor, Fernando, sustained by his factory worker girlfriend Rita, and sexist and reactionary Luís Carlos and inexperient Lilita.
